Mixergy Cylinder Installation in Balham

A Balham homeowner wanted better control, efficiency, and performance from their heating and hot water system. By upgrading an ageing cylinder, integrating solar energy, and optimising pipework and controls, we delivered a smarter, more efficient solution tailored to their home.

The Challenge

The homeowner owned a four-bedroom house in Balham and was experiencing ongoing issues with their hot water system. Their existing 200-litre hot water cylinder was over 16 years old, showing signs of corrosion and no longer performing reliably.

In addition, the property had solar panels installed, but excess generated electricity was not being used to heat the hot water, missing out on potential energy savings.

The heating system also included two separate circuits (radiators and underfloor heating), resulting in a crowded airing cupboard with untidy pipework and limited usable space. The homeowner wanted:

  • Better hot water performance

  • Integration with their solar PV system

  • Tidier pipework distribution and space optimisation

  • Smart control of hot water and heating via a mobile device

Our Solution

After assessing the system, we confirmed that the existing Vaillant boiler was relatively new and in good condition, so it was retained to avoid unnecessary cost. We then:

  • Removed the old, inefficient 200L hot water cylinder

  • Installed a Mixergy X 210L unvented hot water cylinder, a modern, high-performance cylinder compatible with solar PV diversion

  • Integrated the system to use excess solar energy to heat domestic hot water

  • Reconfigured and upgraded heating and hot water controls so all components worked seamlessly together

  • Installed Honeywell smart controls, allowing the homeowner to manage hot water and heating remotely

  • Tidied and optimized the pipework in the cupboard to improve layout, accessibility, and space

All work was completed with minimal disruption and fully tested to ensure optimal performance.

The Outcome

The homeowner now benefits from:

  • Reliable, efficient hot water with faster recovery times

  • Better use of renewable solar energy

  • Full smart control of hot water, radiators, and underfloor heating, controllable from smartphone and digital devices remotely

  • A significantly tidier, more organised system cupboard with more space for storage

  • Improved system efficiency and long-term reliability

The upgrade delivered exactly what the homeowner wanted: better performance, smarter control, and a future-proofed heating and hot water system.
